Alexandra Wood Men’s Tailoring. A Modern Approach to Savile Row.
We sat down with Savile Row tailor, Alex, to discuss her journey into menswear and how Alexandra Wood Bespoke are providing a modern approach to Savile Row.
To kick things off, what does Savile Row mean to you?
Savile Row is the pinnacle of bespoke tailoring. THE destination to get the very best in Men’s tailoring. It’s so steeped in history but it is changing. Its modernising and its by referral approach is starting to vanish.
Alexandra Wood offers a refreshing experience within tailoring, how have you achieved such a welcoming showroom space?
I feel life should be fun! My grandparents were wealthy and lived on Jermyn street and always took us to very glamorous places but I always felt out of place. It felt stiff and uncomfortable. I wanted the feeling of luxury mixed with a feeling of warmth, friendliness and laughter. Life’s experiences shouldn’t be daunting and this very much applies to Savile Row. I’ve even had a customer google ‘Non stuffy tailoring’ and up I popped.
Your passion for design has set about an inspirational journey starting with Shanghai Tang as their Tailoring Manager. Did you always have aspirations to make it on to Savile Row?
To be completely honest, I had no idea that it existed when I was 21 at Shanghai Tang. I started to fall in love with tailored garments and how they can so cleverly transform the body (When done correctly that is) and it all began there. It wasn’t until I was 28 that I discovered the fabulousness of The Row.
Your fantastic work has helped land politician Chuka Umunna on GQ’s Best-Dressed top 50 twice in a row, how does it feel to have your tailoring recognised by such a prestigious publication?
Thank you! It’s wonderful. I do what I do because I’m absolutely obsessed about it. For me, there’s nothing more exciting than transforming a man’s image. It makes them feel more confident, more stylish and ultimately more successful and that’s important to me, so when it’s recognised, it’s a massive honour. It is a shame that still in Menswear names aren’t mentioned when it comes to who designed the pieces like you get with womenswear but I’m making it my mission to change this.
What three words do you think best describe the Alexandra Wood tailoring experience?
Relaxed, transformative and fun.
Finally, as the first woman on Savile Row, what advice would you give to the next generation of aspiring young female tailors?
Do your own thing and always offer the best service you can to your customers. If you’re passionate about what you do, it will be recognised.
