Thanks to a huge range of oils, balms, serums, and more it has never been easier to have a beard that is well-groomed. 

It used to be that beards were reserved for those who had manual labour jobs – it wasn’t something common seen in the office. Great stuff – but once you start growing your beard, you need to take care of it.

Your beard will become unruly and patchy as it grows in, and if this is your first time you will need to take a deep breath and give it a minute. 

Some areas of the face grow in hair faster than others, and they can all vary in thickness and in length. 

So just relax and prepare to wait at least 6 weeks to see some beardy results. 

Face shape

It really is more down to personal choice, but some beard shapes and trims will suit your face more than others. After you have that 6 weeks of growth, take a moment to neaten up any stray cheek hairs and take a look at the neck too. 

Wash it

The first few weeks and even months of beard growth can be an itchy business. Trapped skin cells, dirt, stray food – your beard is a magnet for it all. If you don’t wash your beard regularly enough, it will also feel greasy and smell. 

Use a shampoo that has been designed for beards. They will often have no harmful chemicals and be packed with conditioning ingredients. 

Dry it

Don’t mistake scrubbing your beard with a towel to dry in, instead carefully pat it dry. 

The scrubbing motion will cause damage, dry skin, frizz, and split ends. 

Oils

Every beard will love beard oil, but not every beard oil is for every beard. Even though they contain essential nourishing ingredients, some beard oils will sit heavy on your beard. At the same time, others might be absorbed quickly. 

Just like the hair on your head, your beard hair will react better or worse to different products. You might have hair that loves protein, or you might have hair that needs coconut oil rather than argan oil. 

In general, you should look for oils like jojoba, argan oil, almond oil, and other natural oils. These will nourish your beard and leave it soft and manageable. 

Eat well

You are what you eat, so make sure that you are eating a diet that is rich in B vitamins, plenty of leafy greens, and good fats. They can help you to grow a thicker and healthier beard. You’ll notice the difference as your bear grows. 

And one of the most important things to keep in mind is that whatever you do to your beard, you need to do to your moustache too! All too often, they are left out of the main grooming.
