Tossing and turning in bed at night is no fun for anyone, but for most of us it’s inevitable when the weather hots up. Unless you are lucky enough to have air conditioning in your home, keeping cool in the summer months can feel like a constant battle. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Looking for a solution to help you keep cool on those hot summer nights? One of the simplest things you can do is switch to breathable and lightweight summer bedding. We asked our friend Joe, founder of beddable, about what he thinks is the best fabric for the summer.
What is the best fabric for Summer bedding?
Joe says the summer bedding is the most significant factor in how cool your summer sleep will be. His research and experience in this field leads to two optimal summer bedding fabrics: linen and percale cotton.
Summer Bedding: Linen vs Percale
Linen is a fabric woven from the flax plant. It is a highly breathable fabric that looks chic on a summer bed. All is good so far, but linen bedding is pricey and difficult to maintain. It creases easily and has quite strenuous care instructions. (Linen bedding can only can be washed in cold water and needs to be spun on a delicate program.)
Percale is a weaving technique of cotton, this natural fabric is thinner and more lightweight than linen which makes it ideal not only for using as an under sheet but also for wrapping around yourself as you sleep. Percale is also very breathable and absorbs moisture, meaning that it will keep any sweat away from your skin, helping to improve how cool you feel. It’s also worth mentioning that percale bedding is easier to maintain than linen bedding. Beddable offers crisp and fresh percale bedding in four colours.
Summer Bedding: Avoid Polyester
Whichever fabric you choose, always look for the 100% Cotton or 100% Linen sign, some retailers mix linen and cotton with polyester to lower costs. Polyester is a plastic derivative fabric, which is not breathable. Hence, polyester should be avoided in summer bedding. We spend more than a third of your life in bed, so we think it’s worth investing in quality bedding which in turn will improve the quality of our sleep.
Summer Bedding: The Verdict
Linen is a popular bedding fabric in places like Southern France, where the climate is mild and hot all year round. However, in the UK its use is quite limited to short summer months. As combined with its high price, the cost per use on linen bedding isn’t favourable. Percale weave might not be the most well known option but it is the best summer bedding fabric you can choose. Percale that is woven from 100% cotton has a crisp and cool feel, which is ideal for moderating your body temperature when the weather is hot.
