Northern Wine & Beer Co Rolls Out Inimitable Vegan Wine Box.
The Northern Wine & Beer Co has rolled out a restaurant quality Vegan Wine box as people nationwide once again take part in Veganuary but this time in the midst of a lockdown.
The box of six includes two reds, two whites and two sparkling wines from Spain, France and Italy. All of the wines are usually found in top restaurants around the UK.
Shining a northern light on independent craft producers where freedom inspires creativity, innovation and quality, the Northern Wine & Beer Co searches out drink producers with passion, flair, a touch of humour and those that celebrate and protect the native regions they call home.
Around 90 per cent of the NWBC portfolio is suitable for vegans with plenty of organic and bio-dynamic wines also on offer. The new Vegan Wine Box is priced at £75 including free delivery and includes the following first class wines:
Barahonda Organic Barrica, southern Spain – 14% abv
Barahonda’s organically cultivated vineyards have 40-year-old Monastrell and 20-year-old Syrah vines. The best grapes are carefully selected and vinified separately. When the alcoholic fermentation is completed, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for six months. Barahonda’s Barrica Monastrell Syrah was the winery’s first wine to gain organic status. Velvety and seductive, the wine has a good intensity with clean fruit and an acidity that gives it freshness, balanced by well-integrated sweet oak on the finish.
Vallemayor Rioja Tinto, La Rioja, Spain – 13% abv
Proudly family run, Vallemayor combine modern technology and traditional knowledge for the elaboration of their wines. This 100% unoaked Tempranillo uses grapes from Vallemayor’s own vineyards in the prestigious Rioja Alta. A fruity red wine expressing the characteristic liquorice flavours of Tempranillo. Unoaked, it shows bright cherry and red fruits with a soft, long finish. 13% abv, 2018.
Picpoul de Pinet ‘La Sauterelle’ – Languedoc, France – 13% abv
Green grasshoppers – or Sauterelles – appear in the vineyards at the same time that the vines begin to flower in late spring. The wine consists of 100% Picpoul – a very popular, traditional local variety planted on sun-drenched hillsides called “costières” in the Mediterranean garrigue and near the Etang de Thau – a coastal lagoon situated between the port of Sète and Marseillan. Picpoul is known as “the Muscadet of the South” in France, and locally as “Lip Stinger” because of its vibrant acidity. It is to the Mediterranean coast of France what Albariño is to northwest Spain – the default wine for fresh shellfish and seafood. This wine is both gentle and refreshing with an elegant nose, lifted notes of citrus (grapefruit, lime zest) and stone fruit (peach, apricot) culminating in a vibrant palate of green apple crispness.
Falanghina del Sannio ‘Taburno’ Cantine Iorio – Campania, Italy – 13.5%
Falanghina is a characterful grape, one of the native varietals of the region that thrives in the volcanic soils of the area, which gives a mineral edge to the palate while the nose has a lightly aromatic bouquet. Iorio’s grapes are sourced from the Taburno-Sannio area of Campania, the wine comes under the Denomination ‘Falanghina del Sannio DoP Taburno’. The limestone and clay vineyards are located between 200-600m above sea level. This award-winning wine offers a delicate bouquet of white flowers and exotic fruits before leading into a complex palate with a fine balance of softness and crispness, finishing with fennel and herbal notes.
Saniger Organic Brut Reserva – Penedes, Spain – 12.5% abv
Masia Can Mayol is one of a number of producers who no longer apply the description Cava to their sparkling wines. They are now labelled as ‘Methode Traditionnelle’ and ‘DO Penedès’; a decision based on the desire to guarantee quality. Cava is a ‘production’ DO administered in Madrid, not a regional one. Saniger is a superb blend of Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada with over 15 months ageing and has a full, rich and rounded style with only a little dosage.
BIO Organic Prosecco DOC – Veneto, Italy – 11% abv
One of the most outstanding Proseccos you will ever taste! Excellence is expressed through respect for life, in all its forms, while protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity. BIO wines are created out of love for nature. Using organic grapes from the Prosecco DOC area from vineyards at an average altitude of 150–200m above sea level. The grapes are soft-pressed and the juice fermented at a controlled temperature. Refermentation is carefully controlled, using the Martinotti method to preserve the grape’s special aromatic and floral profile, applying a strict organic production protocol. Brilliant pale straw yellow colour, with a delicate, fine perlage. On the nose, floral and aromatic notes typical of the variety. A delightful, clean, fresh wine with a long, aromatic finish.
